Stata for Mac OS X

Installation Instructions

Before you install: We highly recommend that you install the update using Mac OS 8.6/9.x rather than OS X. In Mac OS 8.6/9.x, the update requires special software that must be installed in the System Folder for it to run. Installed properly, the update will run in both Mac OS and OS X. You must also have the release version of Stata installed. The update only contains a minimal set of files and does not contain any of the support files (such as ado-files) required by Stata.

To install the update,

* Download Stata.sea.hqx if you are licensed for Intercooled Stata or smStata.sea.hqx if you are licensed for Small Stata. You must already have Stata installed. The downloaded file only installs the application and an extension.

* If you have StuffIt Expander installed and it automatically decodes the file and creates the application Stata (or smStata if you download the Small Stata version), you may skip this step. Otherwise, de-binhex Stata.sea.hqx (or smStata.sea.hqx). Double-click the file Stata.sea (or smStata.sea). This will extract an application named Stata (or smStata).

You can obtain StuffIt Expander here.

* Make sure the application is located in a folder other than the Stata folder. Double-click the application to launch it, read the information provided in the installer, and proceed with the installation.

* When prompted, select an existing Stata folder for the installation destination.

Special notes

* OS X no longer requires that you specify the amount of memory an application requires. Stata, on the other hand, requires that you specify how much memory you require for data. To do so, you must set the memory setting from within Stata in the General Preferences dialog. In Mac OS, you must still set the preferred memory setting by selecting Get Info from the File menu in the Finder.

* Per Apple's interface guidelines for OS X, the Quit menu item is no longer located in the File menu although the keyboard shortcut is still the same. The Quit menu item is now located in the Stata menu.
